What Should I Wear to Physical Therapy?

Updated: Jul 1

How to Dress for Comfort and Movement

If you’ve just scheduled your first appointment, it’s normal to have questions—especially when it comes to what to wear. Physical therapy is all about movement, flexibility, and working directly with your body. Wearing the right clothes can make your session smoother, more comfortable, and even more effective.

Here at Fluid Physio in Lawrenceville, NJ, we work one-on-one with patients every day—and we can tell you that choosing the right outfit can help you get the most out of your care. Below, we’ll break down what to wear (and what to avoid) so you’re prepared from day one.

Comfort Is Key

First and foremost, wear something that allows you to move easily. Physical therapy often involves stretching, light exercise, balance work, or hands-on treatment. You’ll want clothing that won’t restrict your range of motion or bunch up when you sit, bend, or lie down.

Think soft, breathable fabrics and flexible fits. For most people, this means:

  • Athletic shorts or loose-fitting sweatpants

  • A t-shirt, tank top, or breathable athletic shirt

  • Comfortable sneakers with good support

If you're coming from work or running errands, it’s totally okay to bring a change of clothes. We want you to be able to focus on your movement—not what you’re wearing.

Consider the Area Being Treated

If we’re working on a specific part of your body—like your shoulder, knee, or lower back—you’ll want to make sure that area is easy to access. That doesn’t mean you have to wear something revealing—it just means planning ahead with your outfit can save time and make treatment more effective.

Some helpful tips:

  • Shoulder or arm therapy: Wear a tank top or sleeveless shirt

  • Knee or hip therapy: Opt for loose-fitting shorts

  • Back therapy: A t-shirt that lifts easily or can be tucked out of the way is perfect

  • Foot or ankle therapy: Bring or wear sneakers; avoid sandals or boots

We always work to preserve your comfort and privacy, but having access to the area being treated helps us give you the best care possible.

What About Footwear?

Supportive shoes are just as important as what you wear on the rest of your body. Many therapy sessions involve balance exercises, gait training, or strengthening movements where you’ll be standing, walking, or shifting your weight.

We recommend wearing clean, supportive sneakers—nothing too worn out or flimsy. Avoid sandals, open-toe shoes, boots, or high heels. If you're unsure what kind of shoe is best for your therapy goals, just ask us. We’re happy to make suggestions based on your treatment plan.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

To make your sessions as comfortable and effective as possible, here are a few things we recommend avoiding:

  • Jeans or stiff pants that restrict movement

  • Dress shoes or flip-flops that don’t support balance

  • Heavy layers that make it hard to move or get too hot

  • Jewelry or accessories that could get in the way during hands-on work

If you’re ever unsure, keep it simple: athletic wear, comfortable shoes, and clothing that lets you move. That’s the recipe for a great PT session.

What If I’m Doing Virtual PT?

If you're working with us through online physical therapy, the same principles apply. You’ll want to wear clothes that allow you to move freely so your therapist can clearly observe and guide your movements on screen. Just make sure you also have a safe, open space and proper footwear for the exercises you’ll be doing at home.

The Bottom Line: Dress for Movement and Ease

At Fluid Physio, we’re here to make physical therapy as supportive and stress-free as possible—including helping you feel comfortable and confident in every session. Wearing the right clothes helps us see how your body moves, gives us easier access for treatment, and helps you get more from each visit.

If you have questions about what to wear or what to bring for your first appointment, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to help you feel prepared and at ease.
