From Pain to Purpose Retreat: a Transformational Weekend in the Catskills

Nestled in the tranquil forests of the Catskills at Menla Retreat & Dewa Spa, our From Pain to Purpose retreat brought together a small group of people who were ready for something different—real relief, deep support, and a new way of living in their bodies. Over four days and three nights, we blended gentle movement, pain education, mindfulness, and time in nature to create an experience that renewed not just bodies, but beliefs, stories, and possibilities.

Stepping Away to Finally Exhale

For many who joined us, life had become a constant balancing act—managing pain, work, family, and responsibilities with very little time left to breathe. From the moment we arrived at Menla, surrounded by the Catskills mountains and quiet forests, there was a collective exhale; you could feel nervous systems begin to downshift into safety and ease.

This retreat was designed for people living with pain or past injuries who still want to feel active, capable, and fully alive—but also deeply supported along the way. Instead of rushing through appointments or being given generic advice, participants entered a space where their whole story mattered: body, mind, emotions, and the life they want to return home to.

What We Actually Did Together in the Catskills

Throughout the weekend, we explored a different way of approaching pain—one rooted in curiosity, compassion, and sustainable movement. Each day included expert-led group sessions weaving together mobility, strength, flexibility, yoga, pain science, mindfulness, and simple tools that could be brought home and integrated into real life.

We practiced intentional, safe movement rather than pushing or forcing, learning how to listen to the body’s signals and respond with respect instead of frustration. There were also guided practices like forest bathing, dancing, and rhythm-based movement that helped participants reconnect with joy, play, and a sense of inner radiance, even while living with pain.

Held by Nature, Nourished by Community

Menla’s beautiful landscape became an active part of the healing process—quiet trails, mountain views, and the feeling of being cradled in a hidden valley allowed everyone to soften their guard. Time spent outdoors, in silence or in gentle conversation, helped participants feel grounded, present, and more connected to themselves and each other.

Inside, nourishing vegetarian meals and cozy shared spaces gave our group a chance to slow down and truly be cared for, often in a way they weren’t used to allowing. Around the table and by the bonfire, stories were shared, laughter flowed, and a sense of “I’m not alone in this” grew stronger with every passing day.

A Journey from Old Stories to New Ones

One of the most powerful parts of this retreat was exploring the “stories” we carry about pain, responsibility, and our own worth. Together, we gently uncovered limiting beliefs—like “It’s all on me,” “I have to hold everything up,” or “I’m not enough unless I keep pushing”—and began to question whether those stories were truly ours to keep.

Through movement, reflection, journaling, and conversation, participants were invited not just to talk about new stories, but to feel them in their bodies. As one guest shared, the work we did helped them move from a story of “I must keep pushing or I will fail” to a lived experience of “I am enough, I am supported, and I support others,” and to realize with deep relief: “I can soften—and nothing falls apart.”

Mindi: “When I signed up for the From Pain to Purpose retreat hosted by Fluid Physio at the beautiful Menla Retreat in the Catskills, I expected it to focus primarily on my physical body and learning how to move more functionally. What I experienced was so much more.

The retreat took us on a journey far beyond movement. We explored our limiting beliefs, uncovered our ‘old stories,’ and began stepping into our new stories—learning how to live from a place of safety, support, and trust.

Through challenges, dancing, meditation, and intentional movement, we didn’t just talk about these beliefs—we felt them and embodied them.

I arrived at the retreat carrying a heavy weight of anxiety. I felt completely responsible for everything—my financial future, my family, my business. My underlying belief was that it was all on me, that I had to hold everything up. It was exhausting.

During the retreat something shifted deeply for me.

I left truly knowing and believing that I am supported. I am not holding everything up alone.

I began to see myself like a strong tree. A tree may stand tall and strong, but it cannot survive by itself. It needs sunlight, soil, rain, gravity from the moon, bark for protection, and an entire ecosystem around it. And just like that tree receives support, it also gives support—providing shade, homes for animals, and nourishment for the earth through its falling leaves.

That realization changed how I see my life and my relationships.

When I returned home, I felt a deeper connection with the people around me. The love and support that was always there was no longer blocked by the belief that ‘I am responsible for everything.’ Instead, I now feel that we are a team supporting each other.

A New Relationship with Pain

In this video, another retreat participant describes how being guided by a physical therapist who truly understands pain made all the difference—especially in a setting that felt safe, nurturing, and non-judgmental.” They speak about reconnecting to movement without fear, feeling seen in their experience, and discovering that healing can also include joy, laughter, and community.
