After this crazy blizzard it is safe to say that most of us may have to shovel out some snow. When I lived in Philadelphia shoveling was the easy part. It was the fighting that would come with neighbors to make sure you kept the parking space that you had dug out!
Getting tired is not a problem you can always come inside put your feet up and drink some hot chocolate while you rest. But is your back going to like that? Probably not, so here’s what you can do to make sure that tomorrow you’re up and moving.
1. Stand up, hands on your waist, bend backwards 10x. Do it gently and go as far as you feel comfortable going. If you feel tight that’s okay, do it in small movements. Repeat. Do this once an hour or two. You need to undo all the forward bending that you did while you picked up the snow.
2. Lay on your back, hands at your sides, knees bent. Now roll your knees from side to side 10x. Go as far as you feel comfortable. Repeat. You can do this every so often if you’re able to. I don’t expect you to find a place to lay down if you’re at work or out shopping.
3. Go for a walk. Nothing strenuous, nothing long and make an easy 5 to 10 minute walk This will get the blood flowing and help your muscles get rid of all the tightness built up shoveling snow.
4. Drink plenty of fluids. Water is your best choice but this is a key ingredient that your body needs to help you get rid of all the soreness.
5. Keep this up until you’re back to pre shoveling status. The soreness and fatigue may hang around for a few days but you should not have to suffer with pain.
If you’re still not feeling well, don’t let more than two weeks go by with ongoing pain without doing something about it! Acute pain like this one can be treated in just one visit!
